Statement of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran- Copenhagen on the attack on the Iranian Diplomatic premises in Damascus

Flagrant Violation of International Law and Inviolability of Diplomatic Premises

On Monday April 1st, 2024 the Zionist regime, in flagrant violation of international law, United Nations Charter, and the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, carried out an attack on the diplomatic premises of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus. Tragically, the heinous attack resulted in the martyrdom of seven Iranian personnel and some Syrian nationals.

The targeting of a diplomatic premise by the Israeli regime goes beyond mere criminality; it represents a profound affront to the shared principle of the international community, namely, the inviolability of representatives and diplomatic and consular premises. This principle is a cornerstone upon which international relations are built, universally recognized, and upheld.

This crime bluntly breached the fundamental principle of diplomatic and consular immunity and blatantly violated the 1961 Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons, including Diplomatic Agents of 1973.

The Embassy welcomes the convening of the UN SC session on Tuesday April 2, initiated by the Russian Federation and supported by China and others in which the majority of the member countries condemned this act of terror by the Israeli regime.

It is high time the international community engaged in strong diplomatic representations to get a procedure in motion to hold the Israeli regime accountable for its crimes in Gaza and the region as a whole.
